Photo Chemistry

Many aspects of the fundamental principles behind photochemistry have been elaborated, but its potential as synthetic tool is underdeveloped and remains as such merely a curiosity in industrial practice. Most chemical conversions indeed are based on thermal energy, using aggressive conditions with reactive (and often toxic) chemicals. Such approach undoubtedly mismatches with the principles of green chemistry, the latter which aims at sustainable processes with low environmental burden. From this perspective, photochemistry features significant advantages to thermal chemistry, including favorable atom economy, lack of reagents (except for photons), high selectivity, and access to deep-seated chemical conversions.

EcoSynth aims at the valorization of photochemistry as full-grown alternative for new or existing chemical processes with particular attention for optimizing energy consumption and for substitution of solvents by renewable alternatives.
