Scalable Chemistry

Scalable reaction conditions do not need a major modification of the synthesis protocols when a larger amount of material is required. Such reaction conditions give a clear added value by saving costs and time as our customers are not confronted with chemistry redevelopment to make larger quantities.

Scalable chemistry is based upon the principles of green or ecological chemistry and also creates economical value for a company. To achieve this EcoSynth focuses on three components and also has the advantage of the in-house development of a semi-quantitative tool, The EcoScale.

The chemical component consists of the choice of reagents, solvents, catalysts, activation methods, … The technical component is about the hardware that will be used, flask, pressurized, inert atmosphere, flow, … And last but not least the training and the mind-set of the R&D people. They need to understand what scalable chemistry is and have to search for sustainable solutions. One of the tools the scientists use at EcoSynth is the EcoScale.

The EcoScale analyses 6 parameters that influence the quality of a reaction (yield, price of reaction components, safety, technical setup, energy requirements, and work up & purification) and gives, similar as for yield, a score on a scale from 1 to 100. In general, protocols that score high on the EcoScale, are better suitable for scale-up.
